Holding a Pick (Plectrum)
Every time you pick up your guitar you should set up your right-hand with the following steps, until they become part of your basic playing technique. By making a conscious effort to follow these steps you will be avoiding some potential right-hand technique problems.
Start with your right-hand open and relaxed as if you are about to shake hands.
With the pick in your left-hand, curl your 1st finger around and place it between the thumb and 1st finger of the right-hand, forming an oval shape as shown.
Hold your pick with just enough pressure not to drop it when playing. With the left-hand, feel the muscles on both sides of your thumb - they should be loose and relaxed. Tightening your grip on the pick will offer more resistance to the string when it is struck, thereby producing a louder sound.
It is recommended that you use a hard pick.
Try different gauges for effect and ease of use.
